This gesture either palm or back of hand facing forward: is sometimes referred to as the Corna. A hand gesture has most recently been adopted by fans of rock and heavy metal music, first used by Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio. The gesture carries only a vague meaning, implying the presence of Satan, malevolence and loud guitar music, and is used in much the same way as headbanging. The gesture was actually popularised as a Satanic salute during the 1960s, appearing in many editions of the Satanic Bible. Nowadays many Americans use the gesture simply to mean “rock on”, or in support of the University of Texas in Austin (known as the “Hook ‘em Horns”).

Occasionally used by baseball players to indicate “two outs”, the corna is actually a positive hand gesture in Buddhism and Hinduism, known as the Karana Mudra in such circles, and is used to dispel evil – an interestingly opposite meaning to its contemporary significance.

Historically, however, the symbol basically means “cuckold” (or rather, “your wife is cheating on you”), and its origins are Mediterranean, possibly dating back to Ancient Greece. The corna is still popular in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Colombia, Brazil, Albania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and seems to be used most often to disagree with football referees - perhaps their wives are taking advantage of their husband’s occupation to score with hunky football players - though only when the referee make an incorrect decision, of course…

Leonard Nimoy remembered an event in his childhood when he was in a synagogue and saw Jewish priests blessing the audience by doing a gesture with both hands to represent the Hebrew letter “shin,” which means “Lord” or “Eternal Spirit”

This hand gesture, became his trademark gesture.

We can see then, in another culture, the same symbol means something entirely different. Even the opposite. Human cultures, continually borrow or appropriate symbols, changing their meaning and significance.

Ok, recent edit.. for new friends.. Many ‘squats’ are taken without permission. Vandilised, made disgusting, full of people with a hatred for society and people in general, full of drugs and alcoholism. These aren’t the squats I’m talking about. Look at someone street homeless. then tell them, that building there, thats been empty for three years, and isn’t about to be moved into. tell them they cant go in and shelter from the cold, rain and wind. Squatting is/was legal as long as the property wasn’t damaged. The people could be moved on if necessary. but for the desperate it gave necessary shelter. At times. where there is no-where to live. Is it wrong to get a mattress and blankets and keep warm inside an old disused house. Making it illegal is saying its wrong. Everyday there are more and more pressures on the poverty stricken, the ill and sick and disabled and homeless. A measure of sucess of governance is how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable individuals. These changes originate from a paticular group of experiences and perceptions. Few in governance or policing, see the flipside. Derelict homes preserved from ruin, cared for. Where the ill, and unsupported find refuge, food and company (like me). Where neighbours are happy, and the owner entirely absent for decades. With benefit changes, more and more with mental health problems are finding it impossible to cope. I hate the injustices of this political system of things and pray wholeheartedly for the swift arrival of the conclusion of this system.
